It can be caused by sex by bacteria being introduced to your vagina, but it can also be caused from sitting around in wet clothes (i.e. a bathing suit or sweaty gym clothes), by wearing thongs, etc. Some people seem to be more predisposed to BV than others. It is not caused by the HPV virus. It should not affect you becoming pregnant in the future or whether you can take birth control pills.
