My father has been diagnosed with prostate cancer. Because of his age, he is not a candidate for surgery. So his local Dr has started him on hormone therapy to decrease the levels of testosterone. He gave him a hormone shot to be repeated every 4 months, plus ordered a prescription which will costs over $500.00 per month. My father does not have prescription coverage with Medicare, only the VA covers medicine, but only if he sees a VA doctor, which is very far away. He, of course, is on a fixed income so he cannot afford $500 per month. We are making an appointment to go to the VA. In the meantime, does anyone know of any all natural supplement or treatment that can assist in the lowering of testosterone levels? Any information would be greatly appreciated.|||Your father%26#039;s cancer may be very treatable depending on his Gleason score, PSA doubling rate and his general health. If your father is in good health (excepting the cancer), then hormone therapy may not be a good choice. It will make him feel tired, cause osteoporosis, and weaken him by causing him to lose lean muscle. You may get better value for your money by seeing a real prostate cancer doctor. That being said, here is an answer to your specific question.

There are several natural products on the market which claim to control prostate cancer (PC). Most of these lower testosterone somewhat. If your father has not had much androgen deprivation therapy (ADT), and he has a clear bone scan, then he might try one of these products. The best of these products Medpro%26#039;s prostasol from Holland and Medpro%26#039;s PC SPES are expensive and hard to get shipped to the US (each cost $105 for just 60 capsules and you must take 9 a day to begin with).

There are other cheaper prostasols sold by other companies (eg Dr Donsbach), but these are not as potent. They may work for your dad. There is a product Isoprost made by Pure Prescriptions. These cost $60-70 per 90 tablets. The daily dosage is 4 tablets per day; so you could get by with two bottles per month. Compliance would be an issue, since you must take the tablets at the right time of day and (I think) between meals.

Besides the %26quot;side effects%26quot; mentioned above, ADT is in general not a good idea because the PC cells generally adapt to a low testosterone environment and becomes untreatable. The herbal remedies often continue to work indefinitely: that is, the PC cells do NOT develop resistance.

It is hard to give you better advice, since you haven%26#039;t included enough information about your father%26#039;s case. If you want more information feel free to email me.

BTW, it is likely that a new prostate cancer vaccine PROVENGE which is likely to be approved by the FDA. May 15th is the review date. If your father has a cancer which expresses Prostatic Acid Phosphatase (PAP), then he might try that. It is a one-time treatment which may help his immune system to recognize and eliminate some of his cancer cells.

Best of luck.

Warwick d|||I know of some medicines that help regulate hormone levels and lower testesterone levels, but mostly in women. Am not sure in cases of cancer as in your father. The medicines are Diane 35, Aldactone, Diamet, Fincar.

As far as costs are concerned, try a health insurance or try some medical loans. All d best, I wish ur dad luck with his health!|||Your father should continue to take the prescription that his doctor has recommended. There are no real substitutes here. First, your doctor is focusing on testosterone levels because he can%26#039;t tell you about the many natural things that really can help your father, even if he is aware of them and wants to, which may not be the case. He is locked into treating with prescription drugs by AMA policy, or face losing his license to practice medicine.

You need to look at the bigger picture and put testosterone on the back burner for a minute, because just regulating his testorone won%26#039;t do diddly for getting rid of the cancer–and that is a possibility if you can think in the alternative medicine area.

Five hundred years ago, people said the world was flat. Today, people say that if the FDA and AMA haven%26#039;t blessed something, it can%26#039;t be real good. Well, here%26#039;s something I know to be real AND good. It%26#039;s a little different take on cancer treatment–

In 1990, I had Hodgkin%26#039;s Lymphoma, stage 3-B, but I%26#039;ve survived. My doctors were great people, but they were limited to surgery, chemo and radiation by profitable AMA treatment policy. During the year in treatment, I started learning about alternative medicine. I%26#039;m a retired engineer, and this is what I%26#039;ve pieced together–our IMMUNE SYSTEMS become weakened by poor nutrition, lack of exercise and reduced oxygen. Once that happens, our body becomes vulnerable to common STRESSORS. Stressors can be environmental, like viruses, heavy metals, pesticides, food additives, electromagnetic waves or pollution. They can be internal things like emotional or job stress, or poisonous people in our lives. Aging is also a contributing factor. So this means:

WEAK IMMUNE SYSTEM + STRESSORS = DISEASE (cancer, diabetes, heart disease, etc.)

Our bodies have 60 trillion–yes, trillion–cells, and there are always some mutating into cancer cells, but a healthy immune system kills them before they have a chance to get a foothold in the body.

It takes a LONG time, usually, or a high level of stressors, to weaken the immune system to the point where it won%26#039;t do its job, but once cancer has formed, it will generally spread rapidly.

THIS IS IMPORTANT! There are ways to BEAT cancer that are currently being used in Europe and around the world, and there are some great books on the subject. I know because I%26#039;ve read about 50 of them from cover to cover. Here%26#039;s a list of the best ones. Some are out of print and getting hard to find–

%26quot;The Cure for All Cancers%26quot;, ISBN 0963632825

%26quot;The Cure for All Advanced Cancers%26quot;, ISBN 1890035165

%26quot;A Cancer Therapy%26quot;, ISBN 0882681052

%26quot;Oxygen Therapies%26quot;, ISBN 0962052701

%26quot;Natural Cures %26#039;They%26#039; Don%26#039;t Want You to Know About%26quot;, ISBN 0975599518

I know of people whose cancer has %26#039;spontaneously remitted%26#039; (WENT AWAY for no known reason) AFTER they went on programs of herbs and nutrition to restart their immune systems.

You and your family must look out for yourselves to stand a chance of being healthy. This is not a joke, and I%26#039;m not selling anything–just trying to help.

I am using the things I learned in those books right now to fight off a second infestation of cancer. I%26#039;ve been at it for over a year now, and think I%26#039;m going to make it. Use what works for you, and pass on your success. Best of luck.

AMA AND FDA–

The American Medical Association (AMA) and the pharmaceutical companies control medical law and the FDA in this country with heavy lobbying and a revolving door policy. WHY would they want to do this? It%26#039;s about the money. In 2006, medicine (doctors, hospitals, researchers and pharmaceutical firms) received 2.1 TRILLION dollars–15% of the total earnings (GNP 13.7 trillion) in the U.S. This is astounding! It means MILLIONS of people worked the whole year just to pay the nation%26#039;s medical expenses!! That%26#039;s totally astounding, and just too big to care about individuals.

In the U.K., the NHS (National Health Services) has denied Hifu (High Intensity Focused Ultrasound) to victims of prostate cancer.

The U-turn comes despite the research published last month in the European Journal of Urology which found that eight out of 10 men were healthy five years after being treated with Hifu.|||That seems like a scary and irrational way to save money. Sounds to me like if more men had that treatment to cure their cancer it would possibly save money on other therapies in the long run. Not to mention the benefits to quality of life.

Also, I like your new avatar! :)|||I%26#039;m sure the Ministers (both of them) for Women didn%26#039;t bat an eyelid, but what did the Minister for Men say? Nothing, because there isn%26#039;t one. The fact that way more funding goes to breast cancer than prostate cancer sort of undermines the idea that there is a shadowy patriarchy running the world. After all, you would think their ***** would be the first thing the patriarchs would protect.

Edit

%26quot;A man diagnosed with prostate cancer has only one-quarter of the cash spent on research into his disease compared to the amount devoted to a woman’s breast cancer. The wide discrepancy shows the scale of the discrimination against men. The two diseases kill similar numbers%26quot; http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,…

Edit

A passing thought: but the fact that we have 2 Ministers for Women and 0 for men (and a female monarch) further undermines the idea that Britain is ruled by patriarchy.|||But, offering Hifu requires funding and this means that the money would have to come from the breast cancer program.

That NHS spends 50x more on women is a sacred cow.|||This seems pretty counterproductive not to mention mercenary. Everyone deserves quality health care and it%26#039;s much easier to keep people healthy by screening for these things before they get out of hand than letting things slide by the wayside and then trying to get a person healthy once they%26#039;re already ill.|||That is terrible. It makes you wonder if the NHS is too broke to pay for it.

The saddest part is that they only want to allow it for men who are in latter stages of the cancer (who may be too weak to respond to it), and deny it to men who are in the early stages of the cancer (who have the greater chances of surviving the cancer).

One thing about America, if you have the money to pay for it, you can get any type of treatment you want.|||The treatment is still under the testing phase and any side effects are truly not known at this time. This is what happens when you allow government and bureaucrats make health decisions. A bureaucrat can keep his job while people are dying, but if they allow a treatment that later has side effects, they will be fired.|||All medical treatments are potentially good or potentially bad - they all have potential side effects… no one knows until the system has been tried %26amp; tested.

B/C has long received considerably superior support (financially and otherwise) than any other form of cancer. The government know full well they are killing men but turn a blind eye.

I%26#039;m disgusted.|||It%26#039;s terrible, in the same way that women are denied the breast cancer drug. It%26#039;s murder to deny people these drugs to save money.|||fortunately there are other prostate cancer treatments

My dad has prostate cancer, and has for a long time. Recently his score jumped from 50 to 195, what is the high end of the psa scale? Everything I%26#039;m reading says 20 is high, do people die at 400, 800, 1000?%26quot;|||My husband had surgery for prostate cancer and his PSA was only 5.2 but it had doubled in one year so they did a biopsy. They found cancer and did a radical prostatectomy. He is doing fine now. I%26#039;ve heard of people%26#039;s PSA being 400, even 800 and over. They fact that your dad%26#039;s score jumped so much is definitely a cause for concern. Is it possible they are using a different methodology for the tests? Some labs have different ways of testing. This might affect the test score somewhat. What has you dad done so far? Watchful waiting? Radiation? Surgery? There are probably options available to him. He needs to discuss these options with a qualified urologist that he trusts. My father-in-law had an extremely high PSA but he had some surgery that prolonged his life several years and he was an old man when he passed away. I know this is scary but there is probably things that the doctors can do to help him. My father-in-law had his testicals removed and there by cut off the testostrone that feeds the cancer. Radical surgery but it worked for him. There may be other less invasive methods they can do. Ask and research the internet. Keep the hope! Best wishes to you and your dad.|||I don%26#039;t think there is a correct answer to your question. Some people fight cancer better than others and it affects peoples bodies differently.

r u scared to c ur doc about prostate cancer, do you , or would you find the moment embarassing?|||No i have seen the gp about my prostate in the past. I even had a day stay operation so a camera could be inserted into my waterworks, to check out the problem. That was okay but a bit sore after!!|||Yes. My doctor is a woman, and I%26#039;m a little uncomfortable talking to her about that kind of thing, and I also don%26#039;t want to offend her by going somewhere else. She%26#039;s been a great doctor.

Also, her hands are really cold, and I don%26#039;t want her to touch me down there!|||The Big C is always a scary topic (Whether you are a male or female).

Yes I would find it embarrasing but I owe it to my family not to give up and die on them because I am embarrassed. If I suspected I had prostrate cancer I would see my Doc.|||No…I don%26#039;t have it, or any other major ailment to best of my knowledge, but have had psa test|||No. It%26#039;s best to keep it checked out. It%26#039;s not embarrasing. For doctors it is a very routine examination.|||Of course all men are fearful of contracting any cancers just as all women are fearful of breast cancer. These are among the most traumatic things that can happen in life and are life threatening. Going to a Dr with potential symptoms is a fearful thing to do but essential if it is to be faced and tackled.|||Yeah, I don%26#039;t want some man sticking his fingers up my batty.|||Get it checked!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Two minutes of embarrasment and a blood test

How hard can that be?

Some scientists say a man has a higher chance of having prostate cancer if he doesn%26#039;e ejaculate in a regular basis. So, how often does he need to ejaculate in order to stay healthy?

Also can a man ejaculate without having orgasm?|||My doctor said that all men will get prostate cancer, some will die of it.|||Unfortunately, there doesn%26#039;t seem to be any surefire way to prevent cancer. However, where the prostate is concerned, the old addage of %26quot;use it or lose it%26quot; seems to hold true. Many reports have been written that suggest at least 3-5 orgasms with ejaculation per week can help maintain a healthy prostate.

As for ejaculation without orgasm… I think %26quot;wet dreams%26quot; or nocturnal emissions would be the only normal circumstance.|||there are not studies supporting this. at this point it is only theory, so no one would really have an answer for it. hopefully that theory is just that, because i have had a vasectomy. the tubes from the prostate are cut, so no amount of ejaculating does anything for my prostate.

i have heard of men ejaculating without orgasm, but i have never experienced it. i know it is possible.|||I heard the other day that a couple should not go more than two weeks with out having sex, that the case then at least a man should ejaculate at least every two weeks by mean of wife, gf or self pleasure as long as it is done. Clean those pipes.|||If he does it%26#039;s not being done right.|||According to recent medical research, men in their twenties who masturbate at least five times a week have a reduced risk of developing prostate cancer in later life. To answer your second question, it is possible to ejaculate without experiencing an orgasm. Similarly, it is also possible to have an orgasm without ejaculating.|||My doctor told me once %26quot; three times a week, whether she needs it or not%26quot;. He was only kidding, but I honestly don%26#039;t think you can prevent ANYTHING. Be active and have fun. Don%26#039;t forget your partner%26#039;s needs as well.

After having a vasectomy in 2000, I have had times where I have gone weeks or even months without sex. There have been times where I am urinating and have released an almost entire ejaculation%26#039;s worth of semen. My question is, can this lead to prostate cancer? If so, please supply resources. My wife thinks that I am just trying to have sex more often, but I have shown her more than once that it is a real problem that can be very painful. I don%26#039;t want any smart allec comments, I need some medical knowledge in this area.|||Vasectomy or frequency of sex has absolutely nothing to do with Prostate cancer. You are probably experiencing symptoms of Prostatitis — a more common condition wherein your prostate gets inflamed. In this case, it is advisable to maintain regular sexual activity (once a day is the norm, depending on your age and overall state of health) inorder to eliminate those prostatic fluids you normally produce.

Going back to Prostate cancer, if you are at least 45 y/o, visit a urologist and have a digital rectal exam, and probably PSA testing (a blood test) if your doctor so decides.|||I would suggest you call the surgeon who did your surgery and ask this question. Personally, I can%26#039;t see a connection between having a vasectomy, sex and prostate issues. Celebate men do not have an increased risk of cancer of the prostate so you shouldn%26#039;t either. This, however, does concern me… %26quot;There have been times where I am urinating and have released an almost entire ejaculation%26#039;s worth of semen.%26quot; From my understanding of how this whole thing works, this can%26#039;t/shouldn%26#039;t be happening together. How can you be sure it%26#039;s semen in your urine and not an infection? How are you feeling otherwise? Do you have pain, fatigue? I think you need to see a doctor… really.

im scared i might have prostate cancer im really scared someone please make me feel safe about this cuz my mom says she not take me to doctors cos it in my head but i just want to be safe so someone please help?!|||prostate cancer in someone your age is rare, but it does happen. I would recommend seeing a doctor, frequent urinating can be a symptom of many things. You could have a bladder infection, diabetes, or a number of other things. I would recommend getting a complete physical.|||Go to the doctor, its a sign of diabetes|||You should go to the doctor, but don%26#039;t freak. It could just be an infection.|||You don%26#039;t have cancer! Forget that. Besides, frequent urination is not a usual symptom of prostate cancer. That happens when you have an enlarged prostate.

Diabetes is a possibility, or an infection, so you do need to let a doctor check you out. Or maybe you%26#039;re just drinking too much water. People get crazy about drinking water these days.|||I am sure you don%26#039;t have prostate cancer at your age. Being frightened and anxious can make you have to pee more often so try to relax a little. It%26#039;s possible you have a bladder infection so you do need to go to the doctor. If you find you are more thirsty than usual it could indicate diabetes so, again, your mom does need to take you to the doctor for a check up.|||Try drinking Cranberry Juice it will help clean your system out. I feel you need to see a doctor.

I read this somewhere. They did a study, and men who ejaculate more often lessen their risk of prostate cancer. Anyone heard of this and how often do they have to ejaculate to lessen the risk?|||I have ejaculated at least once almost every day of my life since puberty, but I still got prostate cancer when I was 57. I%26#039;m 62 now and fully recovered but I%26#039;m still making sure that I have an orgasm almost every day, just in case! Seriously, ultra-frequent ejaculation may help, but I%26#039;m the living proof that it it%26#039;s not a certain prevention.|||I read somewhere that this is true, and he should ejaculate about twice a week.|||you only need to ejaculate about once a month for that effect, if it was true my man would be just fine instead of taking flowmax, he has had 3 wives and lots of girlfriends and tons of lycopeen due to his itallian heritage and tomato sauce, and he still did the nasty by himself daily, drank red wine and everything else he thinks is good for him. all of that stuff is at best marginal help.|||I don%26#039;t know but I%26#039;m not taking the chance.|||I%26#039;m not sure of how often they need to but I have heard that as well. So probably once a day to every other day….if not more.|||All the studies I%26#039;ve read indicate that ejaculation reduces the chances of prostate cancer, but its all still percentages.

Heck - women under mid teens increase chances of certain reproductive cancer by having sex… yet semen in older (adult) women reduces chances of reproductive cancers…

Go figure - humans are designed to have sex… LOL…

Cool question - haven%26#039;t seen an article on the subject in years…

-dh|||i dont think so and there is no solid reference prostate cancer my be just coz of food but its better to ask a doctor|||It cant be proven since any study would have to span over the course of many, many years. But in theory, by ejaculating often, it rids the reproductive system of toxins that build up. Some say these toxins can be a cause of prostate cancer.

Will it prevent prostate cancer? No. If this theory is true, it would only eliminate a single cause of the disease.|||HOW EVER WROTE THAT ARE NOT GETTING A LOT OF SEX AT ALL
