My grandpa is on kemo for prostate cancer. He%26#039;s not nauseous and still has his appetite, but is diabetic- so sending sweets is out. He is so weak and tired- I live in NY and he%26#039;s in Idaho- I can%26#039;t be there to care for him but want to show him I still care so much- Do you have any thoughtful practical gift ideas?

I call weekly to talk and tell him I love him- I just want to give something tangible that can help him feel better…

i think i should give my grandma something too- she%26#039;s going through soo much right now with him being sick… (they just had their 60th aniversary!)|||Be sure to know if he is on any special diet before you send food. For example, some chemo patients become neutropenic during treatment. This means the the white blood cell count is low, making it hard to fight infections. This happens because chemo can%26#039;t tell the difference in bad cells and good, and sometimes kill the good as well.

During the time when the white blood count is low, most patients are forbidden to eat most fresh fruits and veggies. This is because the immune system can%26#039;t fight the bacteria and pesticides as a person with normal blood counts can.

Washing them does not help because the skin of most fruits and veggies is pourous, allowing bacteria and pesticides to seep through the skin into the fruit it self.

IF this is the case with your grandpa, your docs would have went over this extremly well and your he would definatly know about. So, if you ask, he will be able to tell you.

Also, sometimes foods that you love can make you sick while you are on chemo. The treatment can change your taste bud making things not taste right, or make you very sensitive to smells. This smell sensitivity can make things smell horrible and make you nausuas.

So, just ask him if there are any foods he cant have or would rather not have.

Other things that would be good to give would be crossword puzzles or word searches if they are into that. Good way of making the time pass.|||mixed fruits with cheese and crackers and diet pop|||so very very sorry to hear about your grandpa. Maybe a couple of good books, pictures of the family, put together some old and recent pic%26#039;s of the family including animals…that might help. Also, why don%26#039;t you write him something special like how much he means to you and maybe bring up all the good times you guys had together. If he likes to draw, place paper,pens,markers,etc…..he might like that. If he can have fruit….a nice little basket would be nice.If I think of anything else i will write back. Good luck to you and your grandpa……..everything will turn out ok….have faith sweetie………..|||a fun idea would be to buy some old magazines (like a LIFE mag with his favorite old movie star on the cover or an important event to him) from when he was a young scrapper off of ebay that he can read and laugh and have memories about…or get some old movies that he can watch to take his mind off things.|||flowers, fruits, maybe chocolate candy|||I am sorry. You are already doing the most important thing which is talking with him. His diet is limited so gift baskets which usually have food in them would be very difficult. How about a balloon bouquet? It is cheerful. Or send the gift basket with your grandmother in mind so she can snack. Most good florists have fruit baskets. But a wonderful feel better card with a nice letter in it containing memories and why you love him, etc would be super too. It is a difficult time and they are lucky to have such a considerate granddaughter since most young people avoid this time and feel scared of it. But we will be there where they are someday because it ( old age) happens to everyone usually. That is wonderful they had a 60th anniversary|||have you sent a resent picture of you? If not have a nice 8×10 taken and send it, they will both love it I%26#039;m sure. When you ask how Grandpa is doing be sure to ask Grandma too, sometimes we forget the care givers, and they are going through a lot too. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.|||How about some movies (VHS, DVD) and some microwave popcorn.|||a wig

i am just starting puberty and the hair on my %26quot;balls%26quot; is only growing on one side. I also hae to get up almost every night to urinate, and i sometimes get pelvis pain. do i have prostate cancer?|||Cancer is very unlikely - more likely your body is just going through changes for puberty and your hormones have not yet levelled off. If you are very concerned, talk to your dad or a doctor, but I think it is just growing pains and such.

Peace!|||It sounds like you might have a UTI or something though so see the doc and let him check you out. The hair on one side is normal as you are still going through puberty.|||YOU ARE JUST STARTING TO DEVELOP, I WOULD NOT WORRY ABOUT IT ..YOU COULD SEE A DOCTOR , TO SEE WHAT THEY SAY.|||have NEVER heard of a 12 yo boy having prostate cancer…relax and let nature continue its journey….|||Probably.|||It%26#039;s doubtful. I wouldn%26#039;t be concerned about the hair not growing in evenly. 12 is pretty young. If the hair hasn%26#039;t all grown in by 16+, then maybe worry - that is, if you care how even your scrotum hair is. lol

BUT… the pain and frequent urination could be signs of a problem… anything from a bladder infection to who knows what. I%26#039;d go see your doctor about that.|||Are you serious or are you trying to be funny?

You clearly do not know the symptoms of prostate cancer because you don%26#039;t have any of them. Do you even know what a prostate is?

The earliest case of prostate cancer I can find any documentation about is at age 27 and that%26#039;s extremely early.|||don%26#039;t worry about the hair, you are entering puberty it will even out.

I don%26#039;t think you have cancer, but to put your mind at ease, see your doctor about the pain in your pelvis.

most of all don%26#039;t worry too much , can make things seem worse I%26#039;m sure you will be okay|||i wouldn%26#039;t worry….but if you want to talk to your doc|||yes, you do. You will die. Maybe. one day.|||Honey I doubt you have cancer but you need to tell your parents about the problems you are having. Besides the hair growth the other things can be serious like a urinary tract infection, bladder infection, or kidney infection. It is very important that you share this information with your mom or dad and get to a doctor. Any of those infections can cause pain and make you really sick if you don%26#039;t get checked out. I know you may be embarrassed to tell them but it%26#039;s not a big deal and they need to know.|||No. During puberty, hair doesn%26#039;t grow in evenly. Puberty doesn%26#039;t go by a plan and it doesn%26#039;t work in any sort of even pattern. Men generally don%26#039;t have to worry about prostate cancer or get checks until their 40s. The best thing to do would be to ask your doctor but the likelihood is that there is nothing wrong with you.|||Gross! You%26#039;re too young to be on the internet! Play outside or something. Or get a job. As a hobo. Cause all hobos have prostate cancer.|||When you start crapping in your pants cause you are trying to pee then I would worry about your prostate or in about 35 years.

As far as hair on one side of your balls only. That sounds mighty strange. Are you masturbating with only one hand. This could

be part of your problem. Most yound men don%26#039;t know that you have to switch hands once in a while or you are going to end up

with all kinds of problems.

I%26#039;m 23 and my right prostate as been swelling up a bit off and on for several months.. its gets about a half size bigger than my left… and here recently it appears to be a small lump coming and going inside of it.. to the point where you can feel it and move it around….

could i just have an enlarged prostate?|||Yes a man can have prostate problems at any age. Just because it swells, it doesn%26#039;t mean you have prostate cancer(by the way, you only have one).

Men are advised to have their prostate checked every year after they turn 40 but I have had to have mine checked since age 30. I was taking medication for pain and it eventually caused mine to swell. The only real problem I%26#039;ve had with it is difficult urination.

For the sake of your health, get on in to a doctor and have it checked.

Good luck|||YES|||go and see a doctor. you can get it at any age after puberty as far as i know.|||Well in theory you can get almost anything at any age, though it%26#039;s rare. You could have either one, but very unlikely. If you%26#039;re unsure, just see a doctor.|||well, for starters, you don%26#039;t have a left and right prostate–are you referring to testicles instead (inside your scrotum)? The prostate gland is up inside your body–it%26#039;s function is one of traffic control: when you%26#039;re ready to ejaculate, it closes off the urethra from the bladder and allows the seminal fluid to pass instead. So, guess we need to establish exactly what you%26#039;re talking about first.|||First of all men only have one prostate. You would have a very hard time feeling your own prostate because it is contained internally (inside the body).

I%26#039;m guessing your talking about the testicles. Testicular cancer is rare, but it is the most common cancer affecting younger men. If there%26#039;s a lump you should go see your doctor.|||Maybe, but it is unlikely before your testes mature.

Sounds like you need to see a qualified physician.

Out of curiousity, how are you doing all this checking?

Or are you having some assistance?

I am in my fifties and my doc told me my prostrate is somewhat enlarged. She checked for lumps or bumps and didn%26#039;t find any, so basically I got a clean bill or health. There is also the PSA (prostrate specific antigen) test which can be an indicator also. Get going dude, or you%26#039;ll be in sad shape.|||dude your prostate is somewhere up your ar$e and you only have the one. i think youre on about your balls. if you have any lumps that feel unusual then go the docs asap. I always wonder why people sit asking questions on yahoo answer when its a potentially serious situation. you can develop cancer at any age anywhere. a good mate of mine had testicular cancer and had to have one removed at twelve years old.|||Excuse me that is your testicles not your prostate. The Prostate is inside the body and is not visible from the out side. You mite have Testicle strain from having to much ruff sex, or you could have a growth in the testicle sack. May be even a rupture. You need to have a Doctor check it out for you. Not us quicks on yahoo!

I mean just in terms of general discomfort… not involving sticking hands up butts and feeling around.

See… I%26#039;ve got this interesting pain just a tiny bit northward of my groinal parts…. a rather inexplicable and temporary pain, but uncomfortable in an amusing sort of way regardless.

I know my family are rather prone to cancer… my mother%26#039;s father and my own father both having died of it… and since one in three people die of cancer at some point, I wouldn%26#039;t be surprised if I%26#039;d go the same way (unless I voluntarily end myself before that).

I%26#039;m just wondering if pains in that region could indicate cancer at all or whether its just something else. It didn%26#039;t go away when I went for a p!ss… so its not bladder issues, I imagine…

Oh…. and no… I%26#039;m not going to see a doctor.

If it is cancer, I fully intend to just suffer it out to whatever end it may bring.

[Note to theists: life is not sacred… its an accident, and is fundamentally worthless, including mine.]|||well, even if you DO see a doctor, it%26#039;s not like he can force you to receive treatment. i agree with you on the accidental, futile nature of life, but i figure, if i%26#039;m alive now, i might as well enjoy it as much as possible and have as fun and fulfilling a life as possible.

so if i were you, i%26#039;d go to the doctor. if it was something easily treatable that wouldn%26#039;t infringe on my life (such as a daily pill or something), i%26#039;d take the treatment. if i found out it was cancer, i%26#039;d just refuse treatment and enjoy the remainder of my life as much as possible.

i%26#039;m sure you agree when i say i%26#039;d rather have 6 months of good, functional living and then die, as opposed to spending 5 years on chemo, and finally dying miserably.

oh, and to really answer your question, i%26#039;m sorry, i have no idea what prostate cancer feels like, though i hear that since it causes your prostate to swell, it usually causes difficulty urinating, very frequent urinating, or painful urinating.|||prostate cancer is not generally uncomfortable…which is why it usually progresses quite a ways before anything is noticed at all, and then it is usually just something like a slow urinary stream, not pain.

And, if you truly think life is worthless, why bother to ask?|||You probably wouldn%26#039;t feel it at all if it was cancer. It sounds more like prostatis to me. It%26#039;s totally curable with antibiotics….special ones for the prostate.

Why not go to the doc and get rid of the discomfort….it%26#039;s only going to get worse if you don%26#039;t.

PS…In reading your profile statment, you sound a lot like me…with many of the same beliefs and feelings.|||Not sure, but new treatments are comming….

normal PSA but they still dont know if its from prostate bladder or urether.. help|||if this person had prostate cancer three years ago and was treated and now the doctors are suspecting it came back and is now in the bladder or urethera this is very common, it is known as metastasis (meaning the cancer has spread to this area) this is why people who have gone through cancer and had therapy must be rechecked on aregular basis. You cannot be diagnosed as cancer free until you have not had any forms of cancer for 7 years. from the time of no cancer being detected after treatment until the 7th year you are considered in remission meaning body has suppressed itself from developing more cancer. Remember cancer today is nolonger a death sentence as it was once known to be. Cancer is when a normal cell during multiplication and duplication process goes freaky and continues to multiply and duplicate in a rapid fashion,(basicly %26quot;Cells Gone Wild%26quot;).|||I would be interested in what type of treatment you had for your prostate cancer. If you possibly had radiation-then you probably have radiation cystitis. Having a normal PSA is in your favor-but doesn%26#039;t mean it isn%26#039;t prostate cancer. Also, have you been a long term smoker? Long term smokers get bladder cancer a great deal more than non smokers. Good luck with this-seems you need some time with your Urologist.

Please tell me your experiences and successes with ED after Prostate surgery. Does Viagra work? I would welcome any feedback from men and women.|||In the hands of a skilled surgeon, an ordinary erection is still possible, if those two nerves are not damaged. And the trick is to choose a surgeon who does this surgery all the time. ( Had a girlfriend whose husband had to have that surgery. He went into USC or UCLA and interviewed several before he allowed one to do the surgery…. he was very insistant as to the surgeon%26#039;s success rate….. And he was fine. ) It is my understanding that Viagra and similar medication are useless if the nerve(s) are cut.|||In spite of what I was told by my urologist, the operation turned me into a eunuch.|||My dad had the surgery in May. NO luck whatsoever with ED medications or the pump even though the doctor was careful not to sever the nerves. Good luck. oh, and he still has some urinary incontinence too.

There are two ways to have it done open or with a system called the Davinci. The recovery with the Davinci is faster, and you don%26#039;t have to wear a catheter for as long a time because it is done laparoscopically.

My dad also has a friend who had it done several years ago with the open method, he claims he is fine without any problems.

If it is you or a loved one having the surgery I strongly recommend that you/he go to a therapist with whom you can discuss the possibility of never having sexual function again beforehand. This way he won%26#039;t be taken by surprise. My dad expected he would have function after 3 months, because the doctor told him with the davinci he would most likely recover function within three months. I keep telling him the doctor also said it could take up to 1 year so give it time. But honestly I will feel very bad for him if he doesn%26#039;t recover function once he hits that year mark. I think it would have been easier on him to have decided to have the surgery in spite of knowing that he would not regain function. So……..bottom line is in my opinion prepare for the worst and expect the best.|||None of the standard methods work.

Hello, I am Nineteen Years of Age. Forgive any crude language as I am not familiar with all relevant medical terminology.Recently I noticed a slight discomfort at my rear end. So I investiaged further and noticed that quite cleary extruding from the hole is what appears to be nerves….White/Purple four in total little tight clumps each of the four extruding from my anal hole (love to know the term please). Some of the time they are introverted but often are exterior. I have only just noticed this problem and incredibly concearned. As this is surely not normal or something that will pass? I have not had intercourse as of yet……My thoughts were either a type of cancer or an infection. If it is the latter then I have not used any sexual devices. Such as Di l do%26#039;s etc……Please offer an educated or cautionate opinion. Do not attempt to scaremonger and say %26quot;Oh its defnitely serious%26quot; for example….|||Try not to worry too much….sounds as if you might have hemorrhoids.(piles)

A visit to the doctor will help as he/she can provide effective treatment, and of course it needs to be checked out by a professional .|||You have hemorrhoids. Try Preparation H, available at the drugstore. Nothing to worry about, but they can hurt. They are basically blood vessels that have become inflamed and swollen, often caused by constipation. They%26#039;re very common and may bleed. The blood will be bright red, not dark. Take a fiber tablet every day to help you keep from straining during a bowel movement.|||This sounds like hemorrhoids. They are just dilated veins in the skin lining the rectum. You should see your doctor to be sure though. As for prostate cancer, young men do NOT get regular prostate cancer (adenocarcinoma). This is a disease of older men. There are some very rare sorts of cancer that can occur in that area in younger men, but this is highly unlikely to be the case here. Don%26#039;t freak out, you are probably fine, but just get yourself examined by a doctor you trust.

I PRESENTLY HAVE NO PROBLEMS. MY PROSTATE IS SMALL AND I HAVE BEEN TAKING FLOMAX 4 MG. FOR THE PAST 3 YEARS. I QUIT TAKING THE FLOMAX FOUR DAYS AGO. I FEEL GREAT, NO PROBLEM URINATING, AND BLOOD PRESSURE REMAINS 125/70.

ARE THERE ANY REASONS I SHOULD TAKE FLOMAX?

I TAKE THE FOLLOWING MEDS:

TRELSTAR SHOT EVERY 90 DAYS

TENORMIN 50 MG PER DAY

VYTORIN 10/40 PER DAY

LOTRIN 5/20 ONE AM AND ONE PM

81 MG ASPIRIN

200 MG MAGESIUM

1000 MG OMEGA 3

My man friend had the seed inplant of radiation for cancer. It worked. He is cured. He say he can no longer produce semen. Is this true?|||it might but chances are that it doesnt, because sperm is produced in the gonads by testosterone so it actually has very little to do with the prostate, now you do need a healthy prostate in order to ejaculate and get erect enough
