So ive read and heard on tv that taking multivitamins more than twicw a week can cause cancer????….i thought taking them was supposed to be good not bad??…Can someone clear this up for me please?|||That depends on the type and quality of the supplements. Some supplements contain low grade ingredients which burden the body more than help it. Also if your body has heavy metals (and most people nowadays have) your system will not get all the nutrients it needs. Hence people take more and more supplements because they don%26#039;t feel anything from taking there vitamins because the body is not coping with what%26#039;s in it. Parasites also cause problems as they take all the nutrients before you get them.

If you are for example already high in Iron and you take supplements with Iron it can cause problems. Most people take supplements without knowing if they actually need them or if they overburden their body and causing problems down the line, like cancer and other long term illnesses.

The first step in any program before supplementation should be elimination of toxins and parasites. A clean body will be able to uptake and utilize supplements efficiently. Saving you money and headaches in the long run.|||well yes taking to much multivitamins might cause something of the sort. but taking when directed is completely fine.|||Takeing them is good i%26#039;ve been takeing them for decades.

My Father died of prostrate cancer but he never took any vitamins|||There is absolutely no evidence to show or indicate that multivitamins cause any type of cancer. In fact they more that likely will help to avoid it. A goog one to take for overall health and well being is Nature%26#039;s Way Alive~! multivites. With all the chemicals, preservatives and pesticides in our food supply, food has little nutritional value any more. So supplementing major antioxidants and nutrienst is crucial as is a decent diet and lifestyle.|||sure any thing that%26#039;s made in a factory could. they are full of carcinogens|||It%26#039;s the source of the vitamins. The natural ones are different than the ones made in the lab.

Plants are really complicated, and you can%26#039;t just whip up the same thing in the lab.

For example one study showed that people that ate carrots had lower levels of cancer (including lung). They gave people synthetic beta carotene and their rate of cancer didn%26#039;t just go up, but Tripled for smokers (over the control group that wasn%26#039;t taking it.)

Another study showed that men who take synthetic vitamins are more likely to have prostate cancer.

Synthetic vitamines do not necessarily work in the same way natural ones do. Like people take %26#039;Vitamin E%26#039;, but there are 8 different kinds, and they do different things. Most pills are just one kind.|||no an over loaded sack causes prostrate cancer.

about drug ,nutrition…. to prevent this cancer what do u know|||Nutrition, exercise, and a healthful way of life are the best known paths to avoid disease and maintain wellness. Since genetics does play a huge part in our susceptibility to disease there are tips and tricks that we can be mindful of in order to lower our risk.

Concerning Prostate Cancer: Limit or no red meat, fat, and processed foods; increase vegetable consumption; increase lycopene consumed from its natural food source (not supplement). Certain vitamins are thought to reduce the risk of Prostate Cancer. Still, others are believed to raise the risk. As with the prevention of most cancers, vitamins and minerals are best consumed from their natural plant/food source. The reason for this is that the chemical agent responsible for the protective response is not always known. For example, a diet rich in foods containing beta carotene have been shown to reduce lung cancer in smokers. However, beta carotene taken in supplement form may actually increase lung cancer in smokers by as much as 25%.

As my father was diagnosed with PC (75 yo, gleason 8, psa 11, stage T2b)I wanted to help him as he doesn%26#039;t have any access to the Internet. After 2 months of searching I can now say that I%26#039;m quite good informed about the disease, the treatments etc. But I still have some critical questions: what is the turning point, after which this %26quot;mild%26quot; form of cancer turns into an agressive one and kills the patient? Does it happen after it escapes from the gland and causes metastases? Does it always escape from the capsule and treatment(any treatment) tries to keep it there as long as possible? I would very much appreciate if someone could answer these questions.|||Prostate cancer is one of the most %26quot;curable%26quot; forms of cancer. many men live for years with it. overall there is a disease free survival rate of 70-85% for 5 years and a 45-75% for 10 years. most men diagnosed with prostate cancer are over age 65 and have other health issues. many men will die WITH prostate cancer but not BECAUSE of prostate cancer.

the gleason score correlates closely with the prognosis.

a gleason score over 8 and staging of T3-T4 is considered advanced stage disease.

a gleason score of 8-10 is a moderately invasive cancer and more prone to metastisize. it is also usually faster growing than lower gleason score tumors. but the T2b means that the cancer is contained within the prostate and has not spread-and hopefully with treatment it won%26#039;t. prostate cancer does not always escape from the capsule or metastisize. it does not suddenly turn aggressive and %26quot;kill%26quot; the patient.

The treatments are designed to kill the cancer cells. (except surgical removal of the prostate) It%26#039;s not about trying to keep the cancer encapsulated but getting rid of it. cancer cells are mutations and as such any damage to them from treatments will disable them from reproducing. the healthy cells are effected by the treatments as well but because they are normal cells they can repair themselves and replicate. as the cancer cells die off, the healthy cells reproduce and take their place. usually after treatments, the persons psa will go way down. i don%26#039;t know what type of treatment your father is having but i do know that they are all very effective. there have been a lot of studies on prostate cancer and it is one of the cancers that is understood better than some others. if the cancer metastisizes then it becomes more serious but as of now, your father does not have any mets-so that is a good thing.

i am a radiation therapist and about half my patients are being treated for prostate cancer with very good results. and by the way they all do not lose their manly manhood! hope this info helps. good-luck to you and your father.|||Cancer occurs when cells of the prostate mutate and begin to multiply out of control. These cells may spread (metastasize) from the prostate to other parts of the body, especially the bones and lymph nodes. Further tests, such as X-rays and bone scans, may be performed to determine whether prostate cancer has spread.

The Gleason score 8 to 10 = undifferentiated.

Undifferentiated prostate cancer, squamous cell carcinoma, and ductal transitional carcinoma respond poorly to the usual control measures. Metastatic cancer has no cure; median life expectancy is 1 to 3 yr, although some patients live for many years.

Please note that I am not a medical professional.

Please see the web pages for more details on PSA and Prostate cancer.|||if he is able to do the reverse hormone blockaide treatment, as long as it has not spread or metastased….then he won%26#039;t need the radiation.

A few years ago a cancer researcher came out with a paper saying that the best cancer and infection fighter as yet found was Interferon, but, at the time, it cost $15,000 a gram. The good part was that Interferon was a product of the natural breakdown of Vitamin C in your system. The FDA says that the RDA for Vit C is 64 mg a day, just enough to prevent scurvy. Linus Pauling, who got a Nobel Prize for his work with Vit C and a second Nobel Prize for organic chemistry, said 1000 mg a day as a minimum and 2000 mg a day if you are sick. On a personal note, I was sick twice a year, for 2 weeks at a time, for 20 years, and was flat on my back for at least a week each time. To this day the doctors have no idea what the problem was. After I gave up on the doctors I tried Vit C. I took enough to keep from being sick and just below too much to get diarrhea. It followed a bell curve over 2 weeks with a peak at 40,000 mg a day – about 300,000 over the 2 weeks. I was not sick for those 2 weeks and after a couple of years of that I have not been sick since. I did not dissolve my kidneys, as some doctors said would happen. I did not get any calcium build up or stones and did not dissolve my cones or solidify my joints. Try it, but drink a lot of water – Vit C is a natural diuretic.

It seems that now (5 years later) his PSI levels are way up. Does anyone know of someone who has experienced this? If so, where did the cancer spread if any and what treatment did they use? Any articles, personal experience or related information would be very helpful. Thanks!|||I suggest your father have his testicles removed ASAP. Your situation is deemed to turmoil. Having his balls removed the cancer will spread no further. These are your two options, His life, or his balls….this may be a thinker.|||Your question needs to be answered by a urologist. This is not something that a lay person can give you any meaningful advice. Your Dad needs to be evaluated and depending on what is found

will determine what course of action to take. Do this NOW!|||PSA, not PSI. Recurrence following prostate surgery happens perhaps 15-20% of the time. It means he still has cancer, and it must be treated. It needs prompt professional attention, as a recurrence will spread faster than the original cancer if untreated.

The first question is how extensive the cancer is. They will probably do a bone scan to see if it%26#039;s metastasized into his skeletal system. They may do an ultrasound or MRI of the prostate bed as well.

It%26#039;s possible that radiation treatment of the prostate bed may be appropriate follow up, maybe not. The alternative is hormone therapy: Unless the cancer is very advanced, it requires testosterone to grow. By reducing or eliminating his production of testosterone, the cancer may be stopped or slowed. As the idiot above mentions, oriechtomy (removal of the testicles) is one very radical approach to accomplishing this. More likely, they will put him on a combination of drugs designed to mimic castration. The effect of the drugs is reversible, unlike the operation. Diet is also important: limit meats, eat tomato products, brocolli, nuts. No refined sugars.

My suggestion is to visit one of the online help groups for more information:

www.yananow.net

www.ustoo.org

And do get him to a doctor soon.

etc.

My friend who is a Physician%26#039;s Assistant just found out he has prsotate cancer, and is looking into alternative treatments. Any suggestions?|||depends on the stage ??

gleason score 6 i think is good caught early

so i know pts that have done well with hormonal therapy

its a shot on your fanny every 4 mos with psa and prostate exams ….

or a radical prostatectomy hmm how old is he???

he should have a bone scan and ct done to make sure it didnt spread

good luck!!!|||There are different ways of treatments. This depends on what stage the cancer is in.

In any case, it may depends on what the doc has to say.

Needless, provide the support and be positive.|||I would have thought a physician%26#039;s assistant might possibly have known better than to look to alternative cancer %26#039;treatments%26#039;.

In this context %26#039;alternative%26#039; means %26#039;unproven and untested%26#039;. If a medicine has been proven to work, it is no longer alternative medicine, it is just medicine.

Sadly wherever there is cancer there are ruthless charlatans waiting to part vulnerable and desperate people from their money in exchange for ineffective and sometimes dangerous %26#039;treatments%26#039;.

There are also, of course, well-meaning and kind people who pass on information about %26#039;alternative treatments%26#039; they have heard of, usually from unsubstantiated anecdote. These people, though kind, are ill-informed and invariably have no experience of cancer.

Conventional treatments are far from perfect, but we know - because they have been rigourously tested and proven in double-blind clinical trials - that they save many lives and prolong many, many more.

If your friend experiments with alternative treatments he will be investing money, hope and - most dangerous of all - time in ineffective scams while his cancer remains untreated.

People will probably recommend diets; I once thought my organic vegan diet, rich in fruit, veg and juices, and my healthy lifestyle would protect me against cancer. It didn%26#039;t; nor did it cure me.

If your friend is tempted by any particular %26#039;alternative treatment%26#039;, he (or you) should do a search on http://www.quackwatch.org/ for the facts.|||If they worked, %26quot;alternative%26quot; treatments wouldn%26#039;t be alternative any more, would they? They would be tested, approved, and absorbed into the gamut of mainstream treatments.

I am appalled to hear that someone working as a Physician%26#039;s Assistant has failed to grasp this most fundamental division between treatments that actually work and treatments that may or may not work…|||I dont think this would be considered an alternative treatment, but I can tell you from experience.. the very best and easiest treatment. I had prostate cancer 3 years ago. I was treated with Proton Radiation at Loma Linda University Medical Center in Loma Linda California. Proton Radiation is very different from conventional radiation in that it has little and usually no side affects..I was not sick one single day during my treatments, all my male plumbing still works just like when I was 30… Proton Radiation has no side effects because it delivers 90% off the energy for treatment exactly to the specific area being treated… It is released at that point.. Therefore, no surrounding tissue or organs are damaged… The cure rate is about 90% the same or I think a little better than other treatments available..

There is a website called Proton Bob that has much more information about Proton Radiation.. Please read it..and especially read the section of Testimonials from former Proton Radiation patients. Loma Linda University Medical Center pioneered Proton Radiation in this country about 17 years ago and because of their great success, other hospitals in this country are beginning to offer it finally. MD Anderson in Houston, a hospital in Mass( at Harvard I think), one in Indiana and one in Florida that I know of.. The Proton Bob website tells you where it is available. Many Doctors do not recommend it yet.. some just dont know about it, some still consider it experimental and others just flat have a vested interest problem in sending patients else where for treatments… uhhh they dont make any money!!! When all treatments are considered, I believe Proton Radiation is a no brainer decision, no side effects and a cure rate as good or better than other options!! Funny lots of Doctors wont recommend it for their patients, but when I was at Loma Linda having my treatmets, there were sure lots of doctors and other people in the medical fields out there having the treatments for thier Prostate cancer… If you have any questions, feel free to email me or i will also visit on the phone… best of luck… ohh my psa is point one nine thats.19… just be sure and have him check into Proton Radiaton before he decides on any other treatment,…. I think its the only way to go!! One other thing, there is a new book out called YOU CAN BEAT PROSTATE CANCER… by Robert J. Marckini, a prostate cancer survivor he out lines all treatments available and gives the pros and cons.. your friend probably already knows them, but its a great book for any one with prostate cancer… Mr. Marckini had Proton Radiation several years ago.. Every patient who has had Proton Radiation is completely sold on it.. at least, all I have ever met.. Having my treatments was like being on a 3 month vacation in California ..was great. Again be sure you and your friend read the Proton Bob website.. youll see what Im talking about!!!……….Just had to add this.. I read one of the answers above from the fellow who had surgery, chem and radiotherapy….. There is absolutely no need for any of that when Proton Radiation is available.. sorry to write so much.. but since I have already been through it, it just upsets me to see any one go through all of that when its not necessary at all.. As you know those are exactly the treatments that most Urologist are going to try to convince you to take.. My first Urologist wanted me to take Lupron for 10 years.. told me I could live 10 more years.. I had a PSA of 4.5 and a gleason of 8 ..how ridiculicious.. my spelling isnt good and my puter cuts of if i spell check …sorry here it comes mispelling and all!!|||A good diet of vegetables and fruits can help.

Blueberry and pomegranate juices can slow the cancer.

Biobran and Zyflamend are great against prostate cancer.

THe first one stimulate the imune sistem and the second inhibits cox-2 and supress cancer cells.

Best whishes|||Anybody who is recommending herbs, chants, or crystals is an idiot.

I just had prostate cancer - the treatment depends on the age of the patient. Here%26#039;s what I learned:

In old folks, they give them hormonal shots to slow the tumor (the thought being that surgery will make their life worse, and they will die of something else before the slow cancer gets them)

For older folks 60-70%26#039;s or so who may not tolerate surgery, they use radiation, either seeds or beam. This cures the cancer, at least for awhile. Be aware of the side effects - burns, etc. Also be aware of the incidence of recurrence - there%26#039;s a lot of data out there!

I had mine removed (I%26#039;m 55). The latest in surgery is the DiVinci robot - no large incision, and I was discharged 36 hours after surgery and fully recovered after 4 weeks, other than retraining my plumbing. The robot surgery spares the critical nerves for %26quot;man land%26quot;, it just numbs them for a bit.

My cancer was completely confined to the gland, so the incidence of this coming back is slim indeed. Your PA friend should find an experience urologist who can guide him. I consulted several to ensure the accuracy of the information|||I have an alternative suggestion that is all natural and is full of vitamins %26amp; mangosteen. If you are interested in learning more, send me an email.

the cancer is on an early stage|||This National Cancer Institute (NCI) booklet (NIH Publication No. 05-1576) has important information about prostate* cancer. Prostate cancer is the second most common type of cancer among men in this country. Only skin cancer is more common. Out of every three men who are diagnosed with cancer each year, one is diagnosed with prostate cancer.

You will read about possible causes, screening, symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment. You will also find ideas about how to cope with the disease.

Scientists are studying prostate cancer to find out more about its causes. And they are looking for better ways to treat it.

NCI provides information about cancer, including the publications mentioned in this booklet. You can order these materials by telephone or on the Internet. You can also read them online and print your own copy.

Telephone (1-800-4-CANCER): Information Specialists at NCI%26#039;s Cancer Information Service can answer your questions about cancer. They also can send you NCI booklets, fact sheets, and other materials.

Internet (http://www.cancer.gov): You can use NCI%26#039;s Web site to find a wide range of up-to-date information. For example, you can find many NCI booklets and fact sheets at http://www.cancer.gov/publications. People in the United States and its territories may use this Web site to order printed copies. Remeber prostate cancer is 97% curable when caught early like yours. These web sites have more detailed info on treatments as they can be complex. Before you have a radical treatment I would suggest you get a second opinion just as another point of referance. There are some new treatments that are less complicated but you will need input from a dr to decide exactly what is right for you|||since it is early stage, physicians can choose to observe the disease progression. And if it causes any symptomatic problems such as micturation, impotence, doctors may choose to radiate the prostate. You aired a show about Prosate Cancer, a better way of getting it treated!!!

I think I saw ii on Jan 24 07. I need to get this infromation on this topic!!|||It%26#039;s called Brachytherapy. The seeds are radio activated and implanted into the prostate with needles. The amount of seeds and radiation depend on the size of the prostate. It is an outpatient procedure and you can usually resume normal activity within a few days (after soreness). It seems to have a very good result. Check with your urologist about the procedure or make an appointment with a Radiation Oncologist to discuss the procedure. They will be able to tell you what your options are in your area.
