YES - YOU ARE VERY CORRECT- Men could reduce their risk of developing prostate cancer through regular masturbation, researchers suggest.

They say cancer-causing chemicals could build up in the prostate if men do not ejaculate regularly.

And they say sexual intercourse may not have the same protective effect because of the possibility of contracting a sexually transmitted infection, which could increase men%26#039;s cancer risk.

Australian researchers questioned over 1,000 men who had developed prostate cancer and 1,250 who had not about their sexual habits. They found those who had ejaculated the most between the ages of 20 and 50 were the least likely to develop the cancer.

The protective effect was greatest while the men were in their 20s.Men who ejaculated more than five times a week were a third less likely to develop prostate cancer later in life.

Treating prostate cancer will absolutely make you impotent, sterile, and increase the chances of being incontinent. Surgery is on the top of the list for these side effects, radiation or seeds also cause these side effects but sometimes to a lesser effect.

A prostate that has a lot of cancer may cause urination problems, and occasional problems with erections, but the real problems happen after treatment.

I had surgery with unilateral nerve sparing (spared the nerve on the side that did not have any cancer). Recovery from impotence included experimenting with a lot of methods and medications, but ultimately I had 100% success with a pump (medically prescribed vacuum device) and a very small dose of muse. The same combination is used a lot by diabetics who have severe impotence issues. It is a very effective combination to allow a person with impotence problems to continue to be sexually active.

Impotence should not be the deciding factor in delaying treatment of prostate cancer or ignoring treatment. There are treatments for impotance, but not for death.

ADDITIONAL INFO:

Verry sorry to hear of your friends battle with prostate cancer.

The pump was highly recommended because it is natural and keeps the muscles from deteriorating. The pumps from the sex shop dont work. It must be in the class of medically prescribed such as the Osbon Ericaid which retails for over $500 but covered by most insurances if properly reported on a claim. The dose of muse I used was the smallest dose they make to minimize side effects of pain. It was such a small dose that it was ineffective by itself, but when combined with the pump, was effective. The use of baby oil for lubrication helps prevent irritation and burning when using muse. I can only say what worked in my case. Every person reacts differently to various treatments for impotance.

I%26#039;m 56, and have enjoyed a healthy sex life, either with a partner or solo. I have also taken Saw Palmetto for several decades.

I had a healthy prostate, other than the cancer that was discovered a few months ago. I had no swelling, no problems in urinating, no problem is making love. It was only through a radical change in my PSA test that the cancer was discovered.

The study was conducted on men who were scheduled to have their prostates removed due to cancer, but this surgery often results in nerve damage and has about a 50 percent chance of permanent impotence.

The men who ate the whole flaxseed/low-fat diet retained sexual function as well as their drive. And, the longer the men stayed on the diet, the greater their tumor reduction. Their PSA levels, which are used as markers to indicate if someone has prostate cancer or accelerated tumor growth, didn%26#039;t go down very much with the diet - but their cancers showed a higher rate of cell death and slower tumor growth when compared to historic tumor measurements of prostate cancer.

If you want to increase your prostate health, there are several other things you can do in addition to lowering your fat intake and eating whole flaxseed. Supplements that increase testosterone levels or allow conversion of testosterone to DHT (a hormone that can spur prostate cancer growth) may be harmful, as higher hormone levels have been associated with prostate cancer growth. However, the herb saw palmetto has been shown to benefit prostate health without increasing testosterone levels. In fact, saw palmetto is even touted by the AMA and researchers at Harvard as showing great promise in the fight against prostate cancer, despite their more common stance against natural medicine.

Another prostate cancer fighter is milk thistle, which we told you about in our June 1 eAlert. The spice curcumin (known as turmeric) has also been shown to kill prostate cancer cells, according to recent research at Columbia University.

Saw palmetto, flaxseed, milk thistle, and curcumin are available at most health-food stores. A lot of what people have already written is actually quite scary stuff to read. They are however right in saying that these are the symptoms of prostate cancer. What I would say to you is that if you are suffering from prostate problems (as par the symptoms already mentioned), you should not automatically think cancer.

The symptoms listed are those of an enlarged prostate. In most cases the enlargement is known as BPH (Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy), in which the Benign bit tells you that the growth will not spread and is not cancer. Prostate enlargement does happen to a majority of men. In any case, if you are having trouble uriniating or are getting up a lot at night to urinate, go to your Doctor and get it checked. Don%26#039;t assume the worst but be aware that it could be cancer (and isn%26#039;t in most cases).

Good luck!|||yes having to get up in the night for a wee|||Frequent nighttime urination, difficulty starting your stream. THese are all symptoms of prostate problems and indicate an enlarged prostate. That does not mean that it is for sure cancer and many times the enlarged prostate is benign but these would be some symptoms. The best marker is a PSA blood test.|||Early on, it is not unusual for a man to notice no symptoms of prostate cancer. As the disorder progresses, some of the more common symptoms are:

* Sensation of burning or pain when urinating

* Difficulty achieving or maintaining erection

* Need to urinate more often than normal

* Difficulty starting urination

* Lower back pain

* Weak stream of urine

* Blood in semen or urine

* Pain during ejaculation

Visit your doctor if you are experiencing these symptoms as they may be an indicator of prostate cancer or other disorders.|||Prostate cancer is usually adenocarcinoma. Symptoms are rare until urethral obstruction occurs. Diagnosis is suggested by digital rectal examination or prostate-specific antigen measurement and confirmed by biopsy. Prognosis for most patients with prostate cancer, especially when it is localized or regional, is very good; more men die with prostate cancer than of it. Treatment is with prostatectomy, radiation therapy, or, for some elderly patients, watchful waiting.(Merck)

With the advent of Prostate specific antigen (PSA) testing, most prostate cancers are now found before they cause symptoms. Additionally, while most of the symptoms listed below can be associated with prostate cancer, they are more likely to be associated with non-cancerous conditions.

* Urinary hesitancy (delayed or slowed start of urinary stream)

* Urinary dribbling, especially immediately after urinating

* Urinary retention

* Pain with urination

* Pain with ejaculation

* Lower back pain

* Pain with bowel movement

Additional symptoms that may be associated with this disease:

* Excessive urination at night

* Incontinence

* Bone pain or tenderness

* Hematuria (blood in the urine)

* Abdominal pain

* Anemia

* Unintentional weight loss

* Lethargy

I believe they do a blood test to look for PSA levels.|||after a psa blood test they will do a biopsy.|||Beth had the correct answer. Just some clarification.

Only a biopsy can give a definitive answer for ALL cancers. That way, they have a sample of the questioned tissue. This of course assumes they collected the questionable tissue. Biopsies have been known to miss the cancerous portion when collecting a sample.

As for the prostate specific antigen (PSA), it is a good (non-invasive) preliminary test. The levels tend to be inflated with prostate cancer and some other prostate ailments (inflammation can do it). This is NOT always the case. An elevated PSA is for the average man. It may be normal for some males.|||You should be having a PSA test and a DRE as part of your regular exam. Any irregularity should get you a referral to a urologist. The first thing he%26#039;s likely to do is to run a confirmatory PSA test. He will then do an ultrasound exam. If warranted, he will then do a biopsy. A positive biopsy is confirmatory. But a negative one simply means they can%26#039;t be sure, and all the test may be redone after a few months.
